What Are Essential/best Baby Items To Have As A New Parent? What’s Junk? What’s Invaluable? Hints? Tips?

February 16th, 2010

(Sorry this is so long! Many thanks in advance to those who reply!)
We are at week 34 awaiting the arrival of our Babygirl. Gifts and hand-me-downs are starting to come in that we’re marking off the “need to get” list (per Babies R Us).
We still have lots we need to get, so I wanted to ask for your opinions. For all those moms and dads out there, I have attached, below, the Babies R Us “Parents Checklist.” What is necessary? What is not? What is invaluable? What did you get on a whim and are eternally grateful for having? What turned out to be nothing but junk? What brands are the best (i.e., I hear that Boudreaux’s “Butt Paste” is the best there is)?
I’m starting to scout out Craigslist and eBay for deals (who the heck knew breast pumps were unbelievably expensive??? At least I can get new, in box items from eBay and save a few if I watch like a hawk!). If any of you have insights that you would share, we would be very grateful. Thanks!

Does Anyone Know About The Infant Car Bed?

February 11th, 2010

Actually, I hadn’t ever heard anything about them. But my little preemie hated our regular infant car seat. He cried and cried. I knew it was because he was uncomfortable- squished up. So I began investigating and found that several manufacturers make in infant car bed. They’re federally inspected. Graco makes one. I called the police to make sure it was legal and up to standards ( it is.) I bought one – and boy, has it made a difference! I knew our baby was tested at the NIC unit to see his reaction from the car seat, but I didn’t realize that had he been in any distress, they would have made us get this car bed – so that he could lay rather than sit. Have you all heard of this? Did you like yours? I wonder why they don’t advertise this for everyone, rather than make it merely for preemies? Thanks

Further To A Previous Question About Baby Sleeping On The Sofa……?

January 28th, 2010

Could you please carefully read this…..?
Pay attention to the very last sentence too!
Increased Risk of Fatal Sleep Accidents
Adult sleeping environments may contain hazards that can be fatal for babies. These risks include
overlaying of the baby by another individual who may be under the influence of alcohol or sedating drugs;
entrapment or wedging between the mattress and another object such as a wall; head entrapment in bed
railings, and suffocation from pillows and blankets. 18-20
When is sharing a sleep surface not safe?
Sharing a sleep surface with a baby must be avoided in the following circumstances:
• Where the baby shares the sleep surface with a smoker 3-6,10-12
• Where there is adult bedding, doonas or pillows that may cover the infant 10,19
• Where the baby can be trapped between the wall and bed, can fall out of bed, or could be rolled on
• Where the parent is under the influence of alcohol or drugs that cause sedation or is overly tired 19
• Where babies are sharing beds with other children or pets 2,10
• Where the baby is placed to sleep on a sofa, beanbag, waterbed or sagging mattress 19,20
Babies must never be left alone on an adult bed or put to sleep on a sofa 4,13,17,21
I don’t understand how could so many of you say its safe to put a 2 month old baby sleep on the sofa surrounded by pillows???

How Much Formula Should My 2 1/2 Week Old Infant Drink At Each Feeding?

January 26th, 2010

My 2 1/2 week old 10 lb. baby girl usually drinks from 2 1/2 -3 oz. each feeding, but last night she drank 4 oz. before bed and once during the night. Is this normal? I don’t want my baby to be overfed, but I thought she was getting enough with the 3 oz. I’m a new mom and still trying to figure her out.

What Should I Price Things At A Garage Sale?(kids And Baby Stuff)?

January 19th, 2010

I’m not talking about 6 to 10 year old stuff, The things I’m selling are only about 3 or 4 years old. I’ve got some baby and toddler clothes from Gymboree, Baby Gap and Children’s Place that are fairly new, no stains on them and still look great. There are also several cute pairs of shoes that were never even worn. I’ve also got a toddler bed with the mattress, a little tykes kitchen and a few VSmart electronic toys that work just fine. Some people I talk to say to price the clothes and toys at a buck or two, but I just can’t imagine doing that for stuff that originally cost more than 20 bucks. Is 4 or 5 bucks too much? How about the Toddler bed with mattress? The mattress is a Sealy Comfort bed, one side for infants and one side for older babies. Would 20 bucks for the set be too much? Thanks in advance for sharing your advice. -Mich

What Do You Think About Baby Sleeping In Bed With Parents?

January 14th, 2010

My daughter is four weeks old. She had been sleeping in her crib until a few nights ago…I brought her in my room because the weather was really bad. My husband and I both enjoyed having her sleeping in with us, and we all got a better night’s sleep. I would like to do that more often, but I’m afraid if I start it now, she won’t sleep in her crib later. Does anyone have any experience with this? I always swore I would never have an infant in bed with me…funny how your opinions change once you have one!! But like I said, I don’t want to get into something it will be hard to get out of later. Any advice? Thanks!!
